This book is one of my all-time favorites to empower kids as readers. Full of environmental print that’s easily recognizable, littles will LOVE shouting out what each sign says! Cruising through each letter of the alphabet, audiences are confronted with a road sign that begins with the featured letter. Before littles are able to read in the traditional sense (verbalizing a printed word), they are constantly gaining information from pictures and signs around them. So while your young ones might be caught saying “I can’t read yet,” when presented with an EXIT sign, McDonald’s arches, or the Target bullseye, they are quick to share the meaning behind what they see. And that, my friends, IS reading. It’s the beginning stages! I always ask my students at the beginning of the year if they think they are readers. I might get one or two who are confident in their abilities, but most vehemently deny any ability to read. When I ask them for help reading this one, though, EVERY 👏🏼SINGLE 👏🏼 CHILD 👏🏼 participates and reads. When I ask again at the conclusion of the book, littles have wide eyes as they exclaim “I’M A READER!” to their neighbor. It’s a really powerful moment for them, and it lays the foundation for a year of successful work in reading and writing! I can’t recommend this one enough for kinder teachers and toddler families. The high contrast images make it a great one for even the littlest babes. Age Range: 1-5 years Publisher: Chronicle Books Publication Date: April 6, 2012 Like + subscribe for more read-alouds daily!
