The relative stability and prosperity of the world order which has prevailed since the end of the cold war has been upended, bringing a new multipolar paradigm marked by instability and disorder. The Trump Administration’s foreign policy, US-China geopolitical conflict, China and Russia’s growing closeness, disinterested Europe rocked by Brexit, a defiant Iran, India-Pakistan hostility, all highlight the breakdown of American power and willingness to maintain global order. A lack of cohesiveness and even enmity between U.S. allies in the face of U.S. indifference to alliances all point to a degree of disorder not seen since the rise of the Bolsheviks and descent into violence of World War I. Climate change and new, disruptive technologies have defied global control and regulation, exacerbating political, ethnic and social tensions around the world. With American leadership in question, a new world disorder is taking shape, presenting challenges and opportunities in a global realignment. No time to watch the full lecture?
