More than a billion people worldwide, mostly children, do not have a legal identity. In many countries, this means they can't get access to vital services like health care and education, says legal identity expert Kristen Wenz. She discusses why this problem is one of the greatest human rights violations of our time -- and shares five strategies to ensure everyone can get registered and protected. The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). @PoeticProse74 years ago This is a problem for the Romani community as well and one of the reasons they are denied so much assistance and basic public services. I'm not sure that requiring a birth certificate is as much the answer as doing what we have here in the Twin Cities (a temporary identification for public services called an Adult Services card) for the homeless that cannot get or find birth certificates. ... 4

    @kenn_k2 years ago It's truly disappointing that some commenters are missing the point or don't see how important this is. The many problems this causes don't only affect these poor human beings, it affects everyone. I know there's a ton of people whose main concern is access to basic rights and identity, to end another person's suffering. There's also going to be a ton of people on the complete opposite side concerned with the fact these people are legally unaccounted for. That's the simplest I can make it sound to show that it is something that we really do need to bring into focus more than we recognize, no matter where you stand politically. But it ultimately goes way beyond that and affects many aspects of our world. Every life counts. ... 1

    @Libertarian_Neighbor4 years ago Hmmm, I have a birth certificate and the Government is actively limiting, my 1st, 2nd, 3rd (never thought that would happen, police just ordered to be allowed to use all private property), 4th, likely 6th if I’m arrested in the next year, 8th, 9th and 10th (Executive branch is out of control) amendment rights.
    At least I don’t have to incriminate myself and I can be sued by jury. Yay

    @JimzleGameplays4 years ago The problem of the polio kid she mentioned wouldn't be fixed by giving her a birth certificate. In many countries, the governments are not interested in helping the poorest people of that count, regardless to if they 'exist' or not. Only when international NGO's come to such a country, these people are helped. Having a birth certificate and with those, human rights (theoretically), doesn't mean you get those rights in practice. ... 4

    @rain_forest_waterx40934 years ago Ideas Like This Need To Be The Foundation Of What Our Goals Are As A Society And Need To Be Prioritized By Our Government And Legal Leaders. The Focus Of Day To Day Life As A Human Species Is Not Reaching It’s Full Potential And People With Influence And Legal Power Need To Provide More Solutions And Opportunity’s So The Quality Of Living Can Improve Globally. More Steps Need To Be Taken To Find Sustainable Solutions! YouTube And Ted Is Great But How Can Their Be More Progress Made? How Can Regular People Be Involved. Why Is Our Legal Leader Of USA Not Addressing These Problems With The United States Government Behind Him? I Would Love To Be Apart Of The Solution And Effort Into Making Sustainable Solutions For All Of These Problems That Affect The Modern World. ... 2

    @celineguler4 years ago People,
    I just want you to think for a second. Think about yourself, your life, your age, your past years, your memories, your thoughts, your dreams, your past. You wasted all. You wasted your life, your time, yourself. Just take a look back. Just think for a second what is going on around you, whats going on with people, whats going on in the world, whats going on in the universe, for god's sake. Have a meaning with yourselves. Think about around. You are not inadequate in any way. But be aware about it. Stop it with social media. Stop it with the harmful aspects of society. Stop with meaningless. Look around. We need you people, we need each other. We find questions and give answers for it. We find the problems, and we find the soultions. We go to space, find another planets, we make art, we predict the future, we make technology, we make music and sent it to the extraterrestrial lives out there. Be aware. Don't waste your life with meaningless. Wonder, search, investigate, discuss, create, and think. Reach sensible results. Find the meaning. You're not late. Young people out there, we are the future. We are going to find new questions and we're going to answer it. Stop with the meaningless popular culture, and dumb sides of society. Realise things doesn't matter. See the people are you as humans of your own kind. Not black, not white, not indian, not mexican, not italian, not ugly, not beautiful, not poor, not rich. Human. Earthling. Friend. Young people, we are the future. Do your best. ...

    @c80899234 years ago How about if we leave laws up to Nation States elected by their citizens and not some faceless unelected global bureaucracy? 2

    @bobdemott4 years ago In the United States you cannot get help with a place to live unless you already have a place to live. If you are receiving aid to live somewhere you cannot get help with getting an education to get out of poverty because you make too much money receiving help with housing. That is with a birth certificate. The problem of human rights in a country that has them are legislated away because you are poor. ...

    @1truefreedomfighter4 years ago This is good stuff, but this wouldn’t be enough as a single right. It simply allows access to other, more important human rights.
    Maybe I’m being touchy here, but I feel the title here cheapens or assumes the rights you’re trying to empower access to. ...
