How To Play Blues Part 1: Follow The Chords

In today's video, we are going to talk about how to express yourself better with the blues. For that, we are going to go beyond the traditional minor pentatonic scale and add a few strategically placed extra notes. This is done by following the chords. We will be using a blues backing track that uses the traditional blues form: the three chords over the I, IV, V scale degrees. As we are in the key of A that means that we have an A7, a D7 and an E7. In this lesson, we will choose an area of the fretboard to use and within that zone, we will build our three blues chords. Then, we are going to superimpose the minor pentatonic scale over these chords. First, we will phrase on the minor pentatonic scale with all the comfortable licks we know, but being aware of when these three chords happen. If you played the blues before that should be second nature to you. Visualize the chords knowing when they should fall. You will discover that some of the chord notes are not found on the minor pentatonic. If you target these notes when the chord is happening, you will expand your blues vocabulary immensely. Play the chord shape, but instead of strumming, arpeggiate the chord. Blend those notes with the minor pentatonic. Make sure that you are targeting the right notes every time a chord change is happening. If you get lost you can always go back to the safe minor pentatonic world. Work ten minutes a day on this concept and you will see your blues playing getting to a whole new level.
